Torch-on roofing for flat and low-slope roofs

Torch-on roofing uses modified bitumen membranes heat-welded in overlapping rolls to form a watertight barrier. We apply this system to flat and low-slope roofs, including residential garages, carports and home additions. Standard shingles cannot handle standing water on flat surfaces, making torch-on membranes the proper choice for low pitches. We ensure every seam fuses tightly to protect low-slope areas from pooling rain.

What we inspect before we quote

We inspect your roof deck, drains and scuppers in person before writing a quote. Low-slope surfaces are prone to ponding, so we evaluate how water moves off the membrane. We examine existing seams and flashings where leaks usually begin. Whether you need a full membrane replacement or a targeted roof repair, we scope the entire surface during our site visit.

How we roll and weld a membrane

Installing a torch-on membrane requires specific heat-welding techniques to create a continuous, waterproof seal across flat and low-slope roofs. We begin by clearing the deck of all old materials, dust, and moisture. We inspect the underlying wooden sheathing or insulation boards to verify the deck is sound, smooth, and sloped correctly toward drainage outlets. We apply a liquid asphalt primer over the entire surface so the base sheet adheres completely.

Next, we lay down a heavy fiberglass-reinforced base sheet, securing it smoothly across the roof area. We roll out the top cap sheet—a modified bitumen membrane coated with durable mineral granules on top and a torchable asphalt compound on the underside. Using a controlled propane torch flame, we heat the underside of the membrane as we unroll it, melting the asphalt compound into the base layer beneath.

We maintain consistent heat across the roll to form a permanent structural bond. As the molten bitumen flows along the edge, we press the overlapping seams together using a small hand roller. Liquid asphalt bleeds out slightly along every lap, forming an impenetrable watertight seam. We pay special attention to detail around perimeter edges, parapet walls, roof drains, and scuppers. We extend the membrane up vertical sidewalls and seal metal flashing hoods into the flame-welded layers to prevent standing water from seeping behind the barrier.

Once the entire membrane is fused, we inspect every seam, penetration, and drainage transition. We check that water flows unimpeded toward your gutters or scuppers without forming deep ponds. Before leaving your driveway, we clean up equipment, dispose of material scraps, and sweep the surrounding grounds.
